Hi Beth,
Congratuations on starting your scrying adventure! As you realize that crystal ball gazing is one of many tools for you to work with your own highest awareness, it suddenly becomes a lot less mysterious and a lot more fun.
Besides being beautiful, crystal balls are a great tool to develop your spiritual awareness and natural intuitive abilities. Although there are recommendations that have been proven effective, there are no strict "rules" to scrying.
Think of crystal ball gazing as similar to other visionary work, or dream work. Your receptivity is important, and achieving the proper state of mind is probably the most important part of scrying.
As with all these other methods, (especially dream interpretation) the images/colors you see will be personal in nature. Seeing clouds, mist, or fog is quite common; in fact, this is a great sign that you are in the proper state of mind to work with your crystal ball.
